History
Sokilnyky has been inhabited since ancient times. Numerous archaeological findings in the village indicate that the inhabitants belonged to the Chernyakhiv culture. According to these traditions, the name Sokilnyky comes from a species of feathered falcons that lived in the local villages in ancient times. The stories highlight important stages of history about the events in the forest between the villages of Basivka, Obroshyno and Lapaivka in this region, in particular, the period of the First World War and the Galician operation of 1919, as well as events related to the creation of a hideout museum in the Basivka Forest. It became known that this forest played an important role in the events of the First World War, when Russian field positions were established there. Later, during the Galician operation of 1919, there were significant battles that ended in the loss of Ukrainian positions during the confrontation with Polish troops. It is interesting that in the 1940s and 1950s, the military engineering facilities in the Basivka Forest were used by the rebels of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA). The hideout museum, which was created based on the descriptions of the historian Volodymyr Kulyk and other sources, became an important place for preserving the memory of the events of that time. It is a pity that the museum faced a fire in January 2017, which, according to the director, may have been caused by arson. However, restoration work began quickly, and the museum has been welcoming visitors again since 2018. Such places have played an important role in the preservation and passing of history for generations, and it is important that, despite the difficulties, they have been restored and continue to attract the attention of visitors. The mentioned information also points to the tragic events after the Second World War, when the church was used for economic purposes, and later, in 1974, many valuable elements and paintings were lost as a result of a fire and the collapse of the roof. Today, the priceless temple is a complete ruin without a roof or vaults; however, the area around the church is cleaned and organized. The community strives to restore the temple and is looking for ways to realize this goal.
